CJP to Approach Federal High Court for Mandamus Against IGP, DSS, over former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello

The Centre for Justice and Peace (CJP) announces its intention to approach the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, October 7, 2024, to seek an order of Mandamus compelling the Inspector General of Police, the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, and the Director General of the State Security Service (DSS) to ensure the immediate arrest of former Kogi State Governor, Mr. Yahaya Bello. Mr. Bello is a fugitive, evading arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over serious allegations of looting over One Hundred Billion Naira belonging to Kogi State.

This action by the CJP follows a disturbing trend of continued protection afforded to the fugitive by his successor, Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State. This protection has significantly hindered the EFCC’s efforts to effect Mr. Bello’s arrest, undermining the integrity of Nigeria’s anti-corruption initiatives.

The failure of the EFCC to apprehend Yahaya Bello, due in part to the actions of the incumbent Kogi State governor, represents a grave affront to the ongoing anti-corruption war in Nigeria. Such impunity not only obstructs justice but also serves as a dangerous precedent, potentially encouraging other corrupt individuals to evade accountability.

In light of these developments, CJP will collaborate with several progressive civil society organizations, including the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA), Vanguard for Credible Representation, and the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Network of Nigeria. Together, we will provide the necessary support to the EFCC, under its current leadership, to ensure that Yahaya Bello and other corrupt actors are held accountable in line with the administration's commitment to tackling corruption.

CJP remains resolute in its mission to uphold justice and integrity in governance and will continue to advocate for the rule of law in Nigeria.
