Aboyeji To Headline Insurance Meets Tech Conference In Lagos

Andela and Flutterwave co-founder, Mr Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, will headline the fifth edition of Insurance Meets Tech (IMT), scheduled for Nov. 20 in Lagos.

The event, with the theme “Building Insurance That Connects”, will hold at the Balmoral Event Centre, Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja.

Aboyeji, also Founding Partner of Future Africa, is expected to speak on “Capital, Code and the Race to Nigeria’s First Insurance Unicorn”.

According to a statement on Monday, Aboyeji's presentation will examine how stronger capitalisation and technology could expand insurance access and enable insurers to reach more Nigerians through digital platforms.

Odion Aleobua, Convener of IMT, said Aboyeji’s wealth of experience in building technology companies and investing in startups would provide insights into how Nigeria’s insurance industry could achieve similar growth.

“Nigeria has already built billion-dollar companies in payments and in talent, while insurance is still waiting for its breakout moment.

"This is the kind of trailblazing conversation we seek to have at Insurance Meets Tech.

"Aboyeji has built two of those companies and now backs the next generation of founders, so he sees this question from both sides of the table. He is the right person to set the tone for this conversation at IMT 5.0," he said.

Aleobua said the conference would explore how the sector could replicate the success of technology businesses by adopting innovative approaches to product development and customer access.

The conference comes after the recapitalisation of the insurance industry and the implementation of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA), which are expected to reshape the sector.

Aleobua said insurers that had raised fresh capital would need to pursue growth, while making their products more accessible to customers.

He said insurers could combine stronger capital bases with existing technology to reach more customers.

“Insurers now have the capital, and the technology to reach customers at scale is already here.

“What remains is building products that live inside platforms people trust. That is how the first insurance unicorn gets built,” he said.

"I look forward to making that case at IMT 5.0 to executives, founders, regulators, investors and policymakers from the insurance and technology sectors," he said.

IMT, which has held four previous editions, provides a platform for discussions on the intersection of insurance and technology in West Africa.
