Public Affairs Analyst Commends Former Governor Ambode For His Social Intervention Programmes Years After Leaving Office

Former Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, continues to receive commendation from some residents and beneficiaries of his administration's social intervention programmes several years after leaving office.

A public affairs analyst, Mr. Abiodun Fashola, while analysing pro-people governance in an interview on Tuesday, said Ambode readily comes to mind as an example of good governance and people-oriented leadership.

Fashola advised public office holders to strive to initiate legacy projects capable of outliving their tenure in office and making a lasting impact on the lives of the people.

He recalled the impact of policies and initiatives introduced during Ambode's tenure between May 29, 2015 and May 29, 2019.

According to him, the former governor's administration implemented programmes aimed at supporting economically disadvantaged residents, small business owners and vulnerable groups across the state.

He particularly highlighted the establishment of the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), which was launched by the Ambode administration to support entrepreneurship and job creation.

"On March 3, 2016, Governor Ambode inaugurated the board of the N25 billion Lagos State Employment Trust Fund at the Banquet Hall of Lagos House, Ikeja, with the objective of providing financial support to small and medium-scale enterprises and creating employment opportunities for residents.

"The fund was designed to improve access to finance for entrepreneurs and small businesses while promoting economic growth and reducing unemployment in the state," he said.

Fashola noted that initiatives such as the Employment Trust Fund provided opportunities for many Lagos residents seeking to establish or expand their businesses during the period.

He added that beyond infrastructure development, the Ambode administration also introduced programmes targeted at improving social welfare and supporting vulnerable members of society.

Political observers have often cited the administration's investments in road infrastructure, security, transportation and social intervention programmes as some of the defining features of Ambode's four-year tenure in office.

Although opinions remain divided on the overall performance of successive administrations in Lagos State, some residents continue to remember the Ambode years for programmes they believe directly impacted ordinary citizens and small business owners.

Fashola also commended the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for sustaining people-oriented policies and programmes since assuming office in 2019.
