Ogun APC Crisis: Ibikunle Amosun Set To Move To PDP Over Fears Of Defeat At Primary
Strong indications have emerged that former Ogun State governor and senator representing Ogun Central, Ibikunle Amosun, may be considering a strategic political exit from the All Progressives Congress (APC) as his chances of securing the party’s senatorial ticket continue to fade.
Insiders within the Ogun APC revealed that mounting opposition against Amosun has significantly weakened his position ahead of the primaries. Once a dominant force in Ogun politics, the former governor now faces stiff resistance from party leaders and aspirants who have collectively rejected any attempt to impose a consensus candidacy in his favor.
According to sources, this growing isolation has forced Amosun to explore alternative political options, with the People's Democratic Party (PDP) emerging as a possible destination. Political observers believe such a move could serve as a face-saving strategy, allowing him to remain relevant in the political space rather than risk a humiliating defeat at the APC primaries.
Party stakeholders in Ogun Central have reportedly lost confidence in Amosun’s leadership and political direction. A joint petition allegedly sent to Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC National Working Committee detailed concerns over his past actions, particularly accusations of working against the party’s interests during critical elections.
These concerns are not without precedent. In 2019, after his preferred governorship candidate, Adekunle Akinlade, failed to secure the APC ticket, Amosun backed his defection to another platform, creating internal divisions. A similar pattern was observed in 2023, when allies linked to Amosun were accused of aligning with the PDP candidate, Ladi Adebutu, in an unsuccessful attempt to unseat the incumbent government.
Such political maneuvers have reportedly eroded trust among party members, with many of his former loyalists distancing themselves from him. Today, the political landscape in Ogun Central appears to have shifted, as new aspirants—including Lanre Tejuoso—have entered the race, making the contest more competitive and leaving little room for any single candidate to dominate.
Sources further disclosed that Amosun’s alleged ongoing discussions with key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde, may be part of a broader plan to reposition himself politically ahead of future elections.
For many analysts, a potential defection to the PDP would not only signal a major shift in Ogun State politics but also underscore the deepening cracks within the APC’s state structure.
Despite these developments, efforts to reach Amosun for official confirmation have so far been unsuccessful. His silence has only fueled speculation, leaving political watchers closely monitoring his next move as the primaries draw nearer.
