Anioma State Bill: Senate Schedules Public Hearing for July 4-5 In Uyo
The Nigerian Senate has announced a public hearing on the proposed creation of Anioma State, scheduled for July 4-5, 2025, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. This development comes after the bill, sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, passed its first and second readings.
The public hearing aims to gather input from various stakeholders, including traditional rulers, opinion leaders, intelligentsia, youths, women groups, and socio-cultural organizations. Senator Nwoko, the bill's sponsor, has emphasized the significance of this public hearing and urged widespread participation.
According to Senator Nwoko, the quest for Anioma State creation is a historical movement that aligns with the wishes of both past and present generations of Anioma people. He cited the pioneering efforts of legendary figures such as Sir Dennis Osadede, Obi Professor Chike Edozien, and Senator Nosike Ikpo, who initiated the agitation for Anioma State.
Senator Nwoko expressed confidence in the bill's prospects, highlighting President Bola Tinubu's responsiveness and support for the Anioma cause. He also noted the receptiveness of the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as the backing of majority of states in Nigeria, particularly across the South-South and South-East zones.
The senator's reputation for resilience and audacity has generated high expectations among the public. Notably, Senator Nwoko is credited with securing the refund of Paris Club loans, which helped end Nigeria's recession, becoming the first black African to embark on an expedition to Antarctica, and founding the first sports university in sub-Saharan Africa.
