Lai Mohammed Harps On Plans To Grow Nigeria's Tourism Industry

The Nigerian tourism industry is set for speedy development as the Ministry of Information and Culture, in synergy with the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), is set to come up with a new tourism policy for the country. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alh. Lai Mohammed disclosed this during his working visit to the Corporation's headquarters in Abuja, on Tuesday. Alh. Mohammed explained that the policy portends great avenue for the development of the nation's tourism industry, "and it will no doubt lead to an influx of foreigners into Nigeria to appreciate the potentials that abound in the country - our food, music, film, culture and fashion industries which are subsectors of the tourism network." The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Uzamat Akinbile-Yusuf has said that the state government was prepared to collaborate with the Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) to strengthen tourism in the state and in Nigeria. That Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has gone ahead to implement the restrictions or as some people call it, ban of the movement of commercial motorcycles (okada) and tricycles (Keke Marwa) is no news. The decision was met with criticism and condemnation of the government by several residents of the state owing to what they perceive as the inconveniences the policy or the decision would cause. But beyond the inconveniences and disadvantages of the policy, it is necessary to trace the genesis of the restrictions and what it portends to the residents of the metropolitan city on the long run. It should be recalled that the restriction/ban of Okada operations as recently announced by the Lagos State Government is not a new policy. The Policy predates the current government as it took off in 2012 during the tenure of former governor Babatunde Raji Fashola. Lagos State Government has rolled out 65 high capacity buses in addition to the existing buses as part of palliative measures to the restriction of commercial motorcycles and tricycles in parts of the State. The Managing Director of Lagos Bus Services Limited, Idowu Oguntona, announced this deployment at a press conference in Lagos on Monday. Oguntona disclosed that these buses, which started work today have recorded about 10,000 customers in the early hours of today, adding that the 65 buses will convey a total of 35,000 Lagosians daily. He also disclosed that the buses will ply seven routes across the affected areas. “We are here today to witness the official deployment of additional 65 buses into the bus service to basically ease the current pressure that may be experienced on Lagos roads. “We have Oshodi-Ajah, Inner Marina-Ajah, Obalende-Ajah and CMS-Ajah.
