Rethinking Tourism For A More Sustainable World, By Folorunsho Coker

As we celebrate this 42nd edition of the World Tourism Day, this is within the frame of reflection on the urgency of building a practice that is environmentally sensitive and future complaint. The need for a more inclusive, resilient and sustainable tourism has now forcefully come on the global agenda of governments, international organisations, businesses, and local communities, and we must all work together to mitigate the evident challenges and concerns, in a way that safeguards our planet.  It is a great delight to witness and mark the 42nd edition of the World Tourism Day (WTD). This is a day set aside to create awareness about tourism globally, while contemplating the different milestones that have been achieved so far, alongside the recognition of its importance as a crucial pillar of development, both here in Nigeria, and worldwide. World Tourism Day offers an opportunity to come together and celebrate the many and varied accomplishments of our sector, particularly in its drive

The Oduduwa Solidarity Network (OSN) has welcomed the appointment of former Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai (rtd), into the presidential campaign council of the All Progressives Congress. A statement by its national president, Kola Salau, described Buratai as not only an "Encyclopedia of national security" but one who has demonstrated to be a trusted loyalist to any cause he believes in. Recall that the former COAS was on Saturday unveiled as a part of the 442-member presidential campaign council of the ruling party. Buratai was named into the intelligence and security unit as co-deputy director. Applauding the development, Salau said the choice of Buratai is well-deserved having served the country diligently for decades. He said Buratai remains the best COAS in the country's history and it is only logical to include him in such a committee. The Yoruba youths added that as a diplomat, Buratai has continued to break new ground in the areas of security, trade and

Image
The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on the government to improve the honour given first-class and prominent traditional rulers before and after their death. This motion followed a Matter of Urgent Public Importance raised by the lawmaker representing Mushin Constituency 2, Hon. Olawale Abdulsobur Olayiwola, during on plenary on Monday. Referring to the celebration that accompanied the burial ceremony of Queen Elizabeth II of England, Hon. Olayiwola observed that traditional rulers in Nigeria are never given adequate honour and recognition before and after their death. In his comment, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa emphasised that while it might not be easy to honour all the traditional rulers in the state, first-class royal fathers should be celebrated. The Speaker said that he shared the idea of celebrating those who make up the traditional institution adding: "We should learn how to elevate our own. If foreigners are coming to celebrate us thro

Alpha Beach Becomes Den Of Hoodlums, Miscreants, Drug Cartel, Urchins, Prostitutes, Armed Robbers

Located along Lekki-Expressway, Lagos, Alpha Beach, one of the numerous beaches that adorn the area, used to be the darling of many residents of the state and visitors alike.  Those were the days, when the beach had all the paraphernalia of a place of tourism, where people went to unwind and move closer to nature. But this appears to be in the past as the beach has apparently lost its past glory. Those that have been to the beach in the past recalled what it used to look like, saying that the federal and state governments must do something urgently to avoid driving people away from the once upon a time conducive resort centre that used to attract tourists to the acclaimed center of excellence. Visitors to the area appealed to both the federal and state governments as well as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the state to stem the tide of hooliganism in the beach area and return its lost glory, saying that the beach has the potentials of turning the state to tourism destination for fun l

Tinubu 2023: Revisit Shettima, Lalong’s positions for national unity - Group tells APC

Ahead of next year’s general elections, the All Progressives Congress has been urged to revisit its choice of Kashim Shettima and Governor Simon Lalong as vice-presidential candidate and campaign director-general respectively.  The Coalition of North East and North Central APC Stakeholders made the call at a press conference on Monday in Abuja.  In a statement titled ‘APC: Muslim-Muslim ticket and its peril to our Electoral Chances’, the group said the party’s insistence on same faith ticket has caused untold disaffection in its ranks. According to Secretary-General, Dauda Yakubu, the choice of Shettima as Bola Tinubu’s running mate is insensitive and utter disrespect for the ethnic and religious plurality of the country. “The leadership of the Coalition of North East and North Central APC Stakeholders is holding this press conference to drive home a crucial point that can affect the party's electoral chances in the forthcoming presidential elections,” Yakubu said.  “It remains a k
