An Unnecessary Controversy
A debate has emerged on social media regarding the appropriateness of allocating a parcel of land to an individual who is not of Yoruba descent. This controversy is, at best, unwarranted, as Ogun State has always been welcoming to visitors from all corners of the globe.
It is important to note that Governor Dapo Abiodun has repeatedly asserted that Ogun State is open to both local and foreign investors. In recent years, numerous companies have capitalized on the favourable business environment fostered by the current administration, relocating their manufacturing operations to our state, alongside an influx of international investors. This trend is further amplified by Ogun’s unique position as the only neighbouring state to Lagos, which boasts a vast market.
The Abiodun administration remains deeply respectful of our cultural heritage and is committed to preserving it. However, we must also prioritize the industrialization of our state to enhance the living conditions of our citizens through job creation.
ReelFruit has invested $2.5 million in Ogun State. They have an existing agro based factory in the State. The promoters duly applied for land from the state government. Out of the 400 hectares requested, the government allocated only 20 hectares under strict leasing conditions rather than outright ownership.
The company complied with all government stipulations, including the requirement to commence operations on the allocated land within six months. This Dried Fruit Processing Plant is supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and First City Monument Bank (FCMB). Its establishment will significantly reduce post-harvest losses for local farmers and empower them economically.
The presence of such a company in Ogun State will provide substantial benefits to our farmers and create numerous job opportunities for our residents, both directly and indirectly. More farmers on the state will go into fruits farming, creating streams of income. The company is sourcing fruits from farmers in six different states in Nigeria at the moment.
The company exports fruits processed in Ogun State to several countries across the world, plus for our dear state.
It is essential to emphasize that Ogun State does not harbour any biases regarding the origin of investors. Our state is eager to collaborate with reputable investors from both within Nigeria and abroad.
With a growing population in need of employment opportunities and the highest number of tertiary institutions in the nation producing thousands of graduates annually, it is evident that the government alone cannot meet the demand for jobs.
Ogun State encompasses a land area of 16,000 square kilometers, with only a small portion currently utilized.
We urge our citizens to exercise restraint in their commentary on matters that may affect national unity. As Nigerians, the right to freedom of movement is enshrined in our constitution, and no one can hinder or restrict the movement of any citizen within the country.
The Abiodun administration is committed to safeguarding our shared resources while actively pursuing the industrialization and development of Ogun State, always mindful of the sentiments of our people.
