Lagos Assembly Urges Sanwo-Olu To Seek Measures To Ease Hardship ...Confirms Governor's Nominees

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday during plenary called on the State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to create avenues to cushion the effect of the hardship being faced by the people of Lagos State.

Raising the issue under Matter of Urgent Public Importance, Hon. Olusegun Ege noted that the current hardship being faced in the nation has gone beyond what could be handled mildly.

He said: “The Local Government should work on giving out palliatives, transportation should be subsidised and the health sector be carefully looked into because most people cannot even afford to go to the hospitals for medical care.”

Lending his voice, Hon. Temitope Adewale said: “We are at a phase where things are really hard not only for Lagosians but for Nigerians as a whole.

“The government should put in place measures to provide succour for Nigerians," he said.

Hon. Owolabi Ajani noted that “This current issue is a global one; we should look beyond palliatives because palliatives are just as preliminary items to cushion the effect of the hardship."

Hon. Omolara Olumegbon also stated: “The Consumer Protection Agency should be called to order because items cannot just be rising without recourse to what is making it rise.”

In his submission Hon. Oladipupo Ajomale noted that “The rise of the cost of transportation, food items and healthcare needs to be looked into. All hands need to be put on deck to put an end to the hardship.”

Other members who spoke extensively about the hardship being experienced expressed bitterness over the current situation and suggested improvement in agriculture.

Responding to the submissions from Members, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, stressed that “there is no doubt that the challenge before us as representatives of the people is our duty to come together and proffer solution.

“It is unfortunate that we are facing this now; there is no miracle that can be done right now to alleviate the hardship. We must all join hands to look for solutions. We must work hand-in-hand to be able to get out of this.”

Dr. Obasa noted further: “Our Local Governments, House of Representatives members, House of Assembly members and Senators are doing their best in regards to palliatives but no one is talking about it.”

He advised leaders of the country to refrain from portraying the incumbent administration in bad light because of the current hardship which could lead to chaos, saying a whole lot is presently been done but there is need to do more.

“This is not a one-man show. The Governor must summon for a stakeholders meeting which will comprise of the senators and House of Representatives members representing Lagos State, Members of the State House of Assembly and chairmen of the local government areas as well as those in his cabinet to deliberate on the current issues affecting the people of the State in a bid to proffer a relief from the present economic state.

In another development, the House confirmed the Governor's nominees for appointments into the Civil Service Commission, Health Management Agency Public Board , and Lagos State Signage And Advertising Agency.
