Chinelo Anohu Fights Her Successor at PENCOM Dirty

Five years after she was fired as the Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PENCOM), Ms. Chinelo Anohu is yet to recover from the shock as she has continued to organise attacks against her successor and former colleague, Hajiya Aisha Dahir-Umar, using the fringe media and civil society organisations.

Our reliable sources told us that she is currently working with a Commissioner in PENCOM to bring down Dahir-Umar whom she accused of usurping her position in 2017. The Commissioner, whose name was given as Mr. Charles Sylvester, is said to be one coordinating civil society groups to file frivolous petitions against Dahir-Umar. Our sources revealed that Anohu’s budget for the negative media campaign is N200 million.

Recall that when Anohu was sacked in 2017, she refused to hand over to Dahir-Umar, the most senior Commissioner, until operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) intervened. She claimed she was yet to get a letter of termination and was still passing instructions to the staff. She went on to plant stories in the media that it was Mallam Abba Kyari, the late Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, that wanted her removed because she was not making “returns” to him. We learnt that she later met with Kyari and apologised to him, saying she had discovered the truth.

When Dahir-Umar was nominated to be the substantive Director-General in 2020, Anohu used Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who was then the Minority Leader, to oppose her. Abaribe addressed the media saying the nomination of Dahir-Umar contradicted federal character. Various articles then appeared in the newspapers questioning her nomination. A group named Pension Reform Advocacy Group, said to be sponsored by Anohu, petitioned the Senate to kick against her confirmation. However, the Senate still confirmed her appointment.

A journalist told us off the record that Anohu has recently been gathering reporters together and giving them money to write negative stories about the PENCOM DG, alleging fraud and corruption, even though all the allegations have been investigated by various government agencies and dismissed. All she wants to achieve is media blackmail, according to the journalist. The negative reports are supposed to be published over a period of time, starting from last week.

Anohu is said to have recruited an illiterate in the PENCOM when she was DG. The staff was sacked when it was discovered that her certificates were fake and the National Assembly was investigating her. This is said to have infuriated Anohu and the father of the lady. Her father works with one of the government agencies.

All kinds of groups have been swooping on the PENCOM DG threatening to organise mass protests to call for Dahir-Umar’s sack. Some of these groups include National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Civil Society Groups for Good Governance, Initiative for Leadership and Economic Watch in Nigeria, and Global Integrity Crusade Network (GICN).

Anohu, according to our sources, has promised to help Sylvester get appointed as the next DG if Umar-Dahir is eventually sacked after the media campaign.
