CHSR Raises Alarm Over Alleged Attempted Cover-Up And Intimidation In The Rape Case Of Miss Isola Oyinkansola; Calls For Urgent Public Support And Government Action

The Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights (CHSR) has raised alarm and expressed concern over what it called “a tragic and deeply disturbing case of drugging, rape, intimidation, and attempted cover-up involving Miss Isola Oyinkansola, a 20 year old student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba (AAUA), is currently unfolding in Ondo State.”

CHSR expressed grave concern “over emerging threats, institutional negligence, and deliberate attempts by connected individuals to obstruct justice.”

The group, in a statement signed by its President, Comrade Alex Omotehinse, and dated December 5, stated that formal petitions have been submitted to the Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ondo State, the Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, and the Vice Chancellor, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba (AAUA).

“These petitions demand urgent intervention to ensure proper investigation, prosecution, and protection for the survivor and key witnesses.

“On Friday, November 21, 2025, Miss Isola Oyinkansola visited the home of her longtime friend, Queen Sodo, at Cele Street, Akungba. Unknown to her, she was served an alcoholic drink laced with substances that rendered her unconscious.

“Evidence gathered by CHSR indicates that after the victim became unconscious, Queen Sodo invited her male accomplice, Mr. Tom Samuel, a Sociology student at AAUA.

“Tom Samuel proceeded to rape the unconscious victim, while Queen allegedly stood guard. A neighbour, disturbed by suspicious noises, entered the room and found the victim unconscious, with the suspect present, and recorded the incident, a video that has since become key evidence.

“Both suspects reportedly confessed to their involvement. Medical examination conducted at Iwaro General Hospital confirmed bruises, scratches, and vaginal injuries consistent with violent sexual assault. This case, unquestionably, is one of premeditated criminality, exploitation, and violence,” the statement read.

CHSR said further that it has documented several alarming developments on threats and intimidation, adding that the primary suspect allegedly boasted that his mother, a serving police officer, would ensure his release.

The group added that the survivor and the key eyewitness have received serious death threats from individuals, including one Peculiar Sam, who it said is using thugs to intimidate those involved, adding that the eyewitness who bravely recorded the scene has withdrawn from advocacy for safety reasons but remains willing to testify in court.

CHSR noted that there were initial attempts to delay, frustrate, or quietly bury the case at the Akungba Police Division, and that the survivor feared the matter would be closed without justice, prompting emergency escalations to Akure involving FIDA Ondo State and gender advocacy bodies.

“AAUA Student Union leadership allegedly ignored calls for assistance and abandoned the survivor during critical moments. During a court sitting, the state prosecutor reportedly laughed, trivialized the proceedings, and failed to defend the victim.

“A manipulated video clip was introduced by the defendants and played in court without proper objection. The survivor’s phone was seized in court under questionable circumstances. These developments pose a serious threat to the integrity of the judicial process, the safety of the survivor, and the rights of women and students across Ondo State,” it said.

On the current status of the case, CHSR said that the matter was escalated from Akungba to Akure and transferred to Akure on Monday, November 24, 2025, charged to court on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, heard for a second time on November 26, 2025 and that next hearing is scheduled for Monday, December 8, 2025, adding that they are monitoring the case closely and will not allow it to be swept under the carpet.

“CHSR is calling on the Government of Ondo State and all relevant institutions to: Provide immediate security protection for the survivor and the key eyewitness, assign a competent, gender-sensitive, and impartial prosecutor through the Ministry of Justice, direct the Commissioner of Police to investigate threats, interference, and the alleged role of the suspect’s mother and ensure independent monitoring of court proceedings to prevent manipulation,” the statement read.

The group also demanded that the state government should instruct AAUA authorities and SUG executives to desist from actions that may undermine justice, provide psychosocial counseling and trauma support for the survivor and review the conduct of officers and institutions involved in delaying or mishandling the case.

“CHSR views this case as a critical test of the state’s commitment to justice, women’s safety, and campus security. We call on: Nigerians, Civil society organizations, Students body, Women’s rights groups, Media houses, Community leaders and Online activists to pay close attention to this case, amplify the survivor’s story, and resist any attempts to silence or intimidate those seeking justice. This matter must not be swept under the carpet, and CHSR will continue to pursue justice vigorously until the perpetrators are held fully accountable,” the statement added.
