Alalade Defends Tinubu’s UK Visit Amid Criticism Over Borno Killings

APC stalwart from Ibadan North Local Government, Hon. Ademola Alalade, has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over criticism surrounding his ongoing state visit to the United Kingdom, insisting that the trip should not be politicised in light of the recent killings in Borno State.

Responding to comments made by Peter Obi, who argued that the President ought to have cancelled his trip to address the security situation in Borno, Alalade stated that such calls fail to appreciate the importance of pre-scheduled diplomatic engagements.

According to him, state visits are strategic commitments that play a critical role in strengthening bilateral relations, attracting investment, and enhancing security cooperation. He warned that cancelling such engagements at short notice could undermine Nigeria’s international credibility and disrupt ongoing negotiations beneficial to the country.

Alalade emphasised that the Federal Government has not neglected the situation in Borno, noting that senior officials have been deployed to handle the crisis. He disclosed that Vice President Kashim Shettima is expected to visit the state to commiserate with affected communities and assess the situation firsthand.

He further revealed that the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, had also visited Borno to coordinate security efforts and reinforce measures aimed at restoring stability.

Hon Alalade maintained that governance requires continuity and effective delegation, stressing that the President remains fully engaged with developments at home despite being abroad on official duty.

He concluded that rather than framing the UK visit as a sign of neglect, Nigerians should recognise it as part of broader efforts to advance national interests while ensuring that urgent domestic challenges are being addressed through coordinated government action
