Aramide Akin-Bankole Tasks Facilities Managers On Environmental Sustainability In Shopping Malls

An environmental expert, Mrs. Aramide Akin-Bankole has tasked facilities managers on environmental sustainability in facilities management in shopping malls.

Akin-Bankole, who spoke in an interview recently, stated that the real estate sector is experiencing a remarkable emphasis with regard to the design and execution of environmentally friendly buildings from construction to its maintenance as a result of recent concern and consciousness in climate change and sustainability.

According to her; "environmental sustainability is the method of selecting the appropriate resources to be used on a project, which will not further damage the environment, enhance the infrastructure, or adversely affect the people involved.

"In order to promote health and well-being respectively presently and in the future, it is important to protect global ecosystems and conserve natural resources," she said.

She stated that environmental sustainability in commercial buildings and spaces are dependent on reducing negative impact on the environment by using eco-friendly products for cleaning agents, decreased water, energy, and material use such as use of CFC air conditioning system by facilities managers.

She stated that while it might seem impossible to increase the sustainability of the facilities, the managers should conduct sustainability analytics supported by upgrading assets to improve the energy efficiency.

Furthermore, she advised that facilities managers should utilize environmentally friendly cleaning products, conduct preventive maintenance, implement recycling procedures, and hire contractors who are environmentally conscious.

"Sustainability is a societal goal that broadly relates to the ability of people to safely co-exist on Earth over a long time.

"Specific definitions of sustainability are difficult to agree on and have varied in the literature and over time as defined by Wikipedia.

"The ability to meet existing demands without compromising the capacity of future generations to meet their own needs is another way to define sustainability.

"The process of integrating an organization's people, place, and business in a way that maximizes the economic, environmental, and social benefits of sustainability is known as sustainable facility management.

"The sustainable FM process has three components, or a "triple bottom line; "environmental, economic, and social factors," she said.
